Before release
I like jrpg games. So, the moment I saw Sea of Stars, my taste was targeted.
Let's watch the video. If you like dot games + jrpgs, this is a game you can't help but look forward to.
Just before launch
The meta score posted a day before release made me even more excited.
oh!! It’s finally coming out!! oh!? The score is good, it must be a good game...
Most scores were around 89 to 94. I thought that if the meta score was this high, it would be a game that everyone could enjoy without any likes or dislikes.
After launch
Finally, I came up with Game Pass Day One, installed it, and started it.
As expected, the artwork made me excited. But all the good feelings came crashing down after the play.
How on earth does this game get such good reviews? I wondered if I was wrong, so I played a little more.
I guess I'm not weird.
review
What made this game not fun? I thought about a few things.
1. A story and worldview that seems like it was written by Jammin.
I think worldview and story are really important in JRPGs. Due to the nature of JRPGs, if you are not immersed in the world view, you will quickly get tired of the story and will not be able to find the meaning of the game.
This game's worldview explanation is really poor, which results in people not being able to focus on the story. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't immerse myself. I feel like a game like this is really over the moment you can't become immersed in the story. So this is a failed game.
2. The boring story and the poor translation were truly disgraceful.
There are many parts where I can't understand what they're really saying or why they're suddenly saying something like that. If that line is really what the story originally wanted, I have nothing to say, but there are a lot of random lines that make the player feel lonely.
The game is very lively and exciting, but the gamer cannot understand why. It's a tragedy.
3. Uninteresting battle system
The battle system is the highlight of JRPGs and what I'm most looking forward to.
Even if the game story is not interesting, there are games where you play until the end because the battles are often fun.
But this game has a really boring combat system.
- Slow battle development (Character movement is slow, so you feel a haze when watching.)
- They tell you to bring a parrying system, but if you do it for a while, the battle becomes no fun, but parrying only doubles the fatigue.
-Skills that are not cool at all
Overall review
This game was a game where you could see why the meta score was so good and why the meta score was so unreliable.
JRPGs have their own charm, but there seem to be many aspects that cannot be said to be followed by Western gamers.
Like the game Chained Echoes, JRPGs made in the West have a few screws missing. I think JRPGs must be made in Japan to capture that emotion and feeling. Since this is a game genre that has been made in Japan for a long time, it seems like they have accumulated their own know-how.
This game's story, world view, and combat failed to convince gamers.
